A creamy, cheesy slow cooker macaroni and cheese is the ultimate side dish! This mac and cheese calls for simple ingredients and turns out perfect every time.
Hey Cousins! Since so many of you loved my other mac and cheese recipesโbaked mac and cheese and an easy stovetop macaroni and cheese recipeโI decided to circle back and share my slow cooker macaroni and cheese recipe. This recipe is super convenient! You don’t have to boil or drain pasta. You also don’t have to worry about babysitting this side dish. This slow cooker mac is super simple yet packed with so much flavor.
Some macaroni and cheese recipes are complicated with a ton of ingredients. Others are super simple boxed mac and cheese-style recipes. My slow cooker mac and cheese is a perfect mix of easy ingredients and delicious, slow-cooked flavor.
I don’t use any gouda, Velveeta, or any expensive cheeses. Nor do I use evaporated milk or eggs. I keep it simple when it comes to this crockpot mac. If you’re looking for the perfect mac and cheese recipe to serve at Christmas or Easter, family gatherings, or even an easy weeknight dinner, this is definitely the one for you!
Ingredients You Need for the Best Slow Cooker Macaroni and Cheese
So, what ingredients DO you need for Crockpot mac and cheese? I promised simple, so here is what youโll need for a creamy Crockpot mac. Head to the grocery store and gather up these ingredients:
- UNCOOKED macaroni noodles
- Sharp cheddar cheese & Colby cheese: I highly recommend buying a block of cheese from the deli or cheese section and shredding it yourselfโitโs a million times better!
- Butter (salted or unsalted, whichever you have on hand is fine)
- Half & half: For best results, use half & half instead of using whole milk. The half & half makes the macaroni and cheese a lot creamier!
- Campbellโs Cheddar Cheese condensed soup: This will work as our cheese sauce. If you’re not a fan of cheese soup, you can use 12-15 ounces of Velveeta or American cheese.
- Black pepper and plain or smoked paprika (feel free to add some extra seasoning based on your tastes, like onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne for some heat, or even mustard powder for extra flavor)
Since I use a good amount (and variety) of cheese in this mac and cheese recipe, I donโt add any salt. However, if youโd like to add a teaspoon of salt, feel free to do so!
Recommended kitchen tools for slow cooker mac and cheese:
- A Crockpot or another brand of slow cooker (I recommend at least a 6-quart slow cooker)
- A cheese grater to shred your cheese
- Measuring cups and spoons
FAQs & Tips for Making the BEST Slow Cooker Macaroni and Cheese Recipe
Now, since yโall are family, I want my Cousins to know all the tips and tricks for making the best slow cooker mac and cheese possible. For the best results, follow my written recipe! I also have a video tutorial if youโre a visual learner. If you follow the ingredients and instructions in the recipe card below, you will have the creamiest macaroni and cheese ever.
However, if you insist on changing up the recipe, I’ve included some frequently asked questions as well as pro tips from me to make sure no matter what, you’ll have a crowd-pleasing dish!
How often do you need to stir slow cooker mac and cheese while cooking?
When it comes to this recipe, a lot of people ask me if I stir occasionally. I personally don’t stir once my Crockpot mac starts cooking. However, you can if you choose. Actually, if you have an older slow cooker, I highly suggest it!
What is the recommended cook time for Crockpot macaroni and cheese?
In my recipe, I cook my macaroni and cheese for three hours on LOW in my slow cooker. Now, there are a ton of slow cookers on the marketโsome are manual, some are pre-programmable, and some allow for different increments of cooking time. It depends on your slow cooker. Also, keep in mind that older Crockpots tend to run a little hotter than newer slow cookers. Therefore, if youโre using an older slow cooker, it may take less time to cook. To prevent your mac and cheese from burning, check on it periodically!
Can you half or double this recipe?
YES, you absolutely can double, triple, or even half this recipe depending on how many youโre cooking for. The cooking time should NOT be affected, but keep an eye on it throughout the cooking process to make sure. Also, ensure that your slow cooker is large enough to double or triple the recipe.
Should I cook the pasta first or put it in the Crockpot uncooked?
The pasta is NOT cooked before putting it in the slow cooker! Put UNCOOKED pasta into your slow cookerโotherwise, the pasta will be mushy and gross at the end of cooking.
How do you keep the mac and cheese from sticking to the slow cooker?
To keep your mac and cheese from sticking, spray the Crockpot with nonstick cooking spray or use a slow cooker liner (which also allows for easy cleanup!).
What are the best cheeses for creamy macaroni and cheese?
As I said, I highly recommend following my recipe as far as what cheese to use. However, at the end of the day, it comes down to YOUR preference. Here are some other popular cheeses to use for a creamy slow cooker mac and cheese:
- Gouda or Gruyere cheese
- White Cheddar cheese
- Mild or Medium Cheddar cheese (if you donโt like Sharp Cheddar)
- American Cheese
- Mozzarella Cheese
- Pepperjack Cheese (adds a little bit of a zingy kick!)
Whatโs the best pasta for mac and cheese?
Traditional elbow macaroni pasta is the best for a macaroni and cheese recipe. However, you could use shells or short-tube pasta (like cavatappi). Any shape that will hold onto the creamy cheese sauce is a great option.
Is heavy cream or evaporated milk better for mac and cheese?
I prefer heavy cream because it makes the macaroni and cheese creamier. Also, heavy cream has more fat than evaporated milk. However, if you want a lower-fat option, you can use evaporated milk, and it will do just fineโit’s just not MY preference!
Can you freeze slow cooker mac and cheese? Can you make it ahead of time?
Yes, you can freeze this slow cooker mac recipe. I recommend reheating it in the oven rather than in the slow cooker for the best results. As far as making it ahead of time, I HIGHLY recommend making it the day of. It is practically a dump-and-go recipe, and it really doesnโt take that much time. Itโs MUCH better when the creamy cheese sauce is made fresh, with freshly shredded cheese.
I don’t have a slow cookerโhow can I make this slow-cooked macaroni and cheese recipe?
Well, first of all, honey, if you don’t have a slow cookerโget yourself one! Treat yoโself! I have a TON of delicious slow cooker recipes, so itโll be put to good use! However, you can still make a deliciously creamy mac and cheese in the oven, but thatโs a whole different recipe!
How to Make Creamy Slow Cooker Mac and Cheese

When I tell yโall this is an easy recipe, I ainโt lyinโ! It really could not be easier.
First, I start by making the base of my creamy cheese sauce. Then, mix the half and half with the cheddar cheese soup until well combined. Why am I making macaroni and cheese with cheddar cheese soup? Because itโs the PERFECT base for a creamy, decadent cheese sauce. Seriously, even a can of Campbellโs Cheddar Cheese soup comes with a recipe for mac and cheese! Match made in heaven. I also add my seasoningsโblack pepper and smoked paprikaโto my cheese sauce.
Next, youโre going to toss everything in your slow cooker. Start with the uncooked pasta, then add about half of the shredded cheese and butter. Pour the cheese sauce in and give it all a good mix. Top it off with the remainder of the shredded cheese, put the lid on, and let that baby slow cook for about 3 hours.
It turns out to be the creamiest, most decadent mac and cheese recipe ever. Once done, turn your slow cooker to the โwarmโ setting to keep the mac and cheese perfectly heated if you’re serving it as a side at a party or holiday gathering. This is one of my favorite recipes for mac and cheese (and believe meโI have a lot), as well as a family favorite! It saves precious oven space during hectic holiday cooking; it’s full of flavor–the ultimate comfort food.

Could this recipe be baked
Yes, but make sure that you cook the pasta first.
Hi how long should I baked it
I wanted to make this for a work party and I wanted to cook the pasta bring in the ingredients put in crockpot except for cooked noodle then add them but would I use less half and half? Could you email me at cjschaffer8@gmail.com
Hi Cynthia. No, you would still use the same amount listed.
I have a 6 Qt. RIVAL Slow Cooker with 2 low settings: one says 8 hrs and the other says 10 hrs. Which setting do you recommend?
You can use the 6qt slow cooker, but you still should only cook the mac and cheese for 3 hours.
Can i use milk instead of half and half?
Hi Christina. For best results, stick to the ingredients listed ๐
Have you ever tried but eggs in it at the end?
No, it’s not needed ๐
HI MRS ROSIE…DO U PUT THE UNCOOK NOODLES IN THE CROCK POT OR DO U COOK IT FIRST…AND HAPPY THANKSGIVING
Uncooked, as mentioned in the recipe.
So if I wanted to do this receipe but baked it at the end , for that crispy top. Do I have to cook my noodles before hand. Or just follow the receipe n then baked it ? And if so how long should I bake it for?
No, don’t cook the pasta before hand. If you want to bake it afterwards, you’ll have to do so until it reaches your preference.
Hi Rosie,
I have crockpot that can bake or slow cook. I need this done in 1 hour. Do you think I could bake it for how long or cook it on high on slow cook for how long? Thank you
Sorry, Wendy. 1 hour will not be enough time.
If you double it does the cook time change or stay the same.Thank you!
I just put everything in the crock pot following the recipe which states 2&3/4 c <<<half and half which I used but in watching your video I noticed you only have 2 c in your measuring cup…. now I'm wondering was the 3/4 a misprint.
I'm making this for a group I sure hope it turns out Also no where in your recipe does it say cook on low for 3 hours. Only in your video. Just an FYI because it kept me wondering. Thank you if this works it's an easy one!!
I mentioned Cook on low for 3 hours in step 6 and 7.
Hi Rosie, Is there anyway I can contact you personally?
Hi Debbie. How can I help you?
How many does that mac n cheese feed?
It should feed at least 10
I’m confuse your recipe calls for uncooked pasta but in your video your pasta seem to be cooked so I’m just wondering which one is it should we use cooked or uncooked?
Uncooked. The pasta in the video is not cooked prior to adding it into the slow cooker.
when i make the mac and cheese can i double the recipe? how will cook time be effected? thank you
Yes, you can double.
Hi, if doubling the recipe, does it take double time to cook? Thank you

Hello Rosie… I’m now a fan of Gouda cheese thanks to your other mac and cheese recipes. Do you think Gouda will alter the flavor of this cheese recipe? I’m concern of the flavor as well as the creaminess if used. Thanks

The pasta is uncooked ๐
Hi Rosie, I love your recipes. question, can I cook this in the oven instead of crock pot, if so do the noodles, remain uncooked or cooked?
Yes you can cook it in the oven. I would cook the pasta first though, to speed up the cooking process.
question: can I double the recipe in the slow cooker.. with the same cooking time. thanks will cook this for Easter… looks soooooo good
Yes, you sure can! ๐
If you double the recipe how would it affect the cooking time?
Thank you! This was my question, too! We’ve made and loved this recipe several times, and wanted to share it with a large group of our friends.
Hi, Rosie!!!
I’m about to try your recipe… Just wanted to know what size macaroni should I use?
I used regular elbow macaroni
I have the large macaroni from Trader Joeโs. How many uncooked cups should I put in?
You still need the amount listed ๐
if you don’t have a crock pot what can you use as a substitution
In the oven.
If baking in the oven, what temperature and for how long?
Hi. Can’t wait to try this recipe. I usually use evaporated milk in my baked mac n cheese. Have you ever tried?? Do you think it will work here (sub half/half)
Hi Nisha! Sure you can use evaporated milk if you’d like.
Hi Rosie, I made this for Easter Sunday and havent’t stop making it since!!!!! My family loves it so much. All I can say is THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
I love this recipe. It always comes out great. I’m glad that you and your family love it as well!

Add an additional 30 minutes
Thank you, I’m going to make this Saturday for our grandmother’s birthday get together!
Low or high..cooking temp?
I want to make this with a 1lb box of macaroni. Do you think it will spill out? I have a big crock pot.
for best results, stick to the recipe.
Hi can I add mozzarella? I just don’t want it too sharp
It won’t be the same, but you can try
Is 3 cups of dry pasta equal to a pound?
This sounds great, I am planning on making it this weekend.
Im assuming the noodles need to go into the croc pot after being boiled? I just wanted to make sure I was going about it correctly!
I just watched this video- so nevermind my previous question! Cant wait to make this!!!
LOL ..Enjoy! XOXO
No the recipe calls for Uncooked macaroni noodles
Hi Rosie, Can I freeze this recipe? If so, will it be creamy when I heat it up again?
Yes you can freeze it. Cover it when you reheat it ๐
This sounds amazing! What size slow cooker did you use? I have a 4.5 qt and a 6 qt – cooking for 12.
Thanks!
I used a 6qt
I made this for our staff potluck and it was amazing! I even cooked it in my classroom and the kids were going nuts because it smelled so good! It was creamy and delish…The cheddar cheese soup is not 15oz…it’s a little over eleven so I used two and added extra cheese. Next time I will double the recipe.Everyone loved it! And it’s soooooo easy to make too!
Hi Karen! I’m glad that you liked the recipe!
Can I use a 7qt crock pot also will double the recipe
Yes. That should be fine.
Thank you. This time not going to double. But will use the 7qt. Can’t wait to taste will let you know how my guests enjoyed
Hello Rosie. Is there a substitute for the condensed soup or can we leave it out and just add more cheese? Thanks for sharing your recipe!
You can use velvetta, but I think that the soup is much better. Adding more regular cheese won’t work.
Sounds good. Thanks for a quick reply!
Can this be mixed ahead of time and not become mushy when cooked.
I’m not sure. I’ve never mixed it ahead of time.
Just made this mac and cheese and it was THE BOMB.COM!!!!!!!! Thanks for the recipe!
Hi Cynthia! Glad that you liked my recipe! XOXO
Ok, there seems to be alot of confusion about how many ounces or lbs equals 3 cups of macaroni. I searched the internet and no one can agree. So on your video I saw a 2lb bag of macaroni did you use the entire bag or measure out 3 cups from that because I want to follow the recipe exactly.
The recipe and exact amounts that I used are listed.
Hi Rosie,
Recipe sounds great however beside velveeta as a replacement what other substitutes can be used?
This is in my crockpot as we speak. I can’t wait to see the results when I get home!
Hi, this looks A-Mazing in your photos but I have a questionI usually use Gryere in my mac and cheese do you think I can use it wit yhthis recipe? And I have read some recipes crockpot recipes that say if you have a smaller crockpot with just the HIgh and Low settings the recipe doesnt work well do you think I can use your recipe in my smaller crockpot with just the High and Low settings. Thank you so much for sharing.
You can added Gruyere if you’d like. I don’t know the size of your Crock-Pot is so I can’t advise you, on that.
There is this soul food place where I live and I had their mac and cheese (white cheeses) at a catered event. They won’t cater unless I order a minimun of 500. It was the best mac and cheese and I have experienced different ways and cannot find their way. It melted it your mouth, it was so good! The cheese wasn’t thick and sticky like most recipes I have tried. Would you happen to have a similar recipe? It seemed like they topped it with yellow cheese but underneath all that was white cheeses. Thanks!
I’ll see what I can do.
Hi Rosie this is currently cooking in my crockpot it looks so good. I have a question. Can I double the recipe in the crockpot? I have a 1st bday part this weekend for my son and I want to make it as a side but I need it to feed like 30-40 people. What do you recommend?
Yes, you can double the recipe. Try adding maybe 30 minutes or so to the cooking time.
Hi Rosie if I double the recipe do you think it would fit in an 8qt crockpot?
absolutely.
Did you double the recipe?
How long did it take?
Thanks
Do you think adding cooked ground beef in the beginning would effect the cook time or creaminess at all?
I never tried it. It would probably depend on how much you add.
Can any type of pasta be used? If I want to use shells do I need to adjust cooking time? Thanks! Can’t wait to try it!
Yes. You can use shells. No time adjustments.
I only have a 3 qt crock pot. is that big enough to make a single recipe?
It may be a tad bit to small. ๐
Hi Rosie, This recipe looks so yummy and easy! I want to make it for my church’s youth group dinner, about 30 people. Can I triple the recipe? And if yes, how much additional time should I cook it? Thanks, Allyson
Hi Allyson, more than liking you’ll probably need a bigger Crock-Pot slow cooker. I don’t think you can add everything in one slow cooker.
I doubled the recipe. Didn’t have colby cheese so I used smoked gouda. It was amazing. Lots of compliments. Thanks for the recipe.
Hi!! When You are talking about doubling the recipe are You saying to double (All) the ingredients?
Hi Tom!! Yes, doubling all the ingredients.
I made this on the fly this week as a last minute side dish. My family LOVED it. So it’s Sunday and I have to make it again. The hardest part is keeping everyone out of the pot while it’s cooking! I followed the recipe to the tee except I used extra sharp, regular cheddar and mozzarella cheese. It’s creamy and delicious.
Made this for me wife and I. Used 5x cheese. She said it was just like her grandmother made.
Awee. I’m glad that she liked it!
I prepared this recipe for 11 people this weekend. I followed the recipe exactly. My husband kept telling me I needed to stir it, and I kept telling him that we did not need to ๐ He was sure we wouldn’t be able to serve it to our guests, but to his surprise it came out perfectly – creamy in the middle, macaroni perfectly cooked, and on the way to crispy on the sides and bottom. Couldn’t have been better!! Thanks, Rosie!!
HAHA!! Wives know best! LOL. Glad that you enjoyed the recipe!
I made this a couple weeks ago for the family and it came out so delicious. The cheddar cheese soup really made this recipe exceptional, thank you so much for this recipe.
Hi Courtnee! Thanks so much for trying my recipe! XOXO
Hi Rosie,my Name is Becky,i just recently found your blog, and I am so glad I did.i am always looking for recipes to cook for my family of seven, and your recipes are perfect.i am going to make your Mac and cheese for my family tomorrow and I know their going to love it. Thank you Rosie and keep cooking girl.
Hi Becky! I’m glad that you found me! I have plenty more recipes coming, so stay tuned! XOXO
I’m going to try this … Do you need to spray the crockpot before adding the ingredients?
No you don’t need to spray ๐
Can I reheat in Crock-Pot or will it get soggy?
I never tried to reheat in the Crock-Pot. I usually reheat in the oven or microwave.
Do you think wheel shaped pasta would change the cooking time? This sounds AMAZING and the reviews agree! My son’s 2nd bday party is this weekend and we have a “transportation” theme so I was really hoping to use the pasta wheels for “wheels & cheese”!
No, you should be fine! I hope you all have a great party! ๐
Thanks so much for the recipe – it was AMAZING!! Everyone loved this – kids and adults combined! I will DEFINITELY be making this again. So very easy and yummy! Great for parties!
Hello,
I’m new to the crockpot game, and will try this recipe this weekend. If I wanted to add some sort of chopped up meat, how would you recommend I add it so that it heats up safely? Let’s say either a sausage or ground beef. Would I brown them first, then throw them in the cooker with everything else? Would three hours on low be enough time? Thanks!
Hi Phil! You can add smoked sausage in with during the last 30 minutes of cooking. As for ground beef, make sure that you brown it first, drain the fat, then add it in during the last 30 minutes of cooking.
I made this recipe for a church function..definitely a keeper!
Hi Sheila! Glad that you like the recipe!
I couldn’t find a 15 ounce can of the soup, I got two 10 3/4 cans should I use both of those or one and a half ?
Hi Kendra. I need the measurements of the cans. Ounces? Cups? Etc.
Hi, I am in the same situation I could only find 10-3/4 ounce can of cheddar cheese soup. I am going to play it safe and get 2 cans. What do you think Rosie 1 or 2 cans of the 10-3/4 ounce? Thanks for sharing!
going to make this today, but it looks like in the video you are using 1&3/4 cups of 1/2and 1/2, not 2&3/4 cups….a little help please?
Hi!
I’m making your mac n cheese now for home…but tomorrow, I’m making it for a company luncheon. Can I triple the recipe and use an 8 qt crock pot? If so, how should I adjust cook time ?
TIA!
Tammy
Hi! My store only had Colby Jack, will that work okay?
For best results, I’d stick to the recipe ๐
Can this recipe be doubled? I have an event that I need to feed 24 people a side dish and this recipe looks FABULOUS! I’ve never made it in the crock pot before but I’m always trying new things so I’m giving it a go. I can do them at separate times if you think I need to do them one batch at a time.
Hi Tina. Yes, it can be double. You may want to add a lil more time on it.
Thank you! I appreciate the quick reply!
If baked, at what temperature and how long?
If baked, how long and at what temperature in oven?
I’m gonna try this today! Will add some bacon to it! Is it okay to use a white cheese …..like white cheddar cheese?
Sure, you can use white cheddar.
Can this be doubled and still come out good? I have a potluck and I’m not sure recipe as is will be enough.
Yes. It can be doubled
I’m trying this out for an election viewing tomorrow. I’m pretty sure I found this or a recipe like it a year ago and it turned out fantastic. I’m excited to see how this goes this time around. Thanks for posting this!
Awesome! Enjoy!
Can I substitute something else for the cheddar cheese soup? Only because I forgot to buy it at the store.
For best results, I suggest sticking to the recipe.
I found this recipe a few days ago,and decided to make some in my 2.5 qt. crockpot to try it. I halved the recipe,as there’s just the 2 of us.The soup can here in Canada is 10 ounces,so I used it all and used a bit less half and half. I didn’t have Colby cheese, but did have Gruyere,so I used that. I used smoked paprika. It was so quick and easy to put together; it was delicious,my husband loved it too! I’ve never put uncooked pasta in my crockpot befote today; I won’t hesitate to make other recipes calling for uncooked pasta. Thanks for sharing this recipe!
Hi Ramona! So glad that you were able to work around the recipe, with ingredients that you had on hand! XOXO
Rosie!!! I cannot find the Campbell’s cheddar cheese anywhere! Please help me with this. How do I do it without the Campbell’s cheddar cheese?!?!?!
Thank you
Try making a homemade cheese sauce. I have several other mac and cheese recipes with homemade cheese sauces
Question??? Do you use the same amount of time using cooked pasta (3hours) if it’s placed in the oven? I can’t wait to try this it looks so delicious.
No. You would not cook it for 3 hours in the oven, especially if the pasta is cooked.
Ok so how long do I cook it for? I want to follow the recipe exact just don’t have a big enough crock pot. Thanks
I have other mac & cheese recipes available.
Do I use low or high tepm
Low, as in the recipe ๐
I made this yesterday for a work potluck. It was so easy, inexpensive, and tasty. It was absolutely best right when done (creamiest) but we still at on it all day long. Thanks so much! We had a coworker from Louisiana, and she made the best Southern Food and we’ve all be missing it. I found your website while searching for a crockpot mac & cheese, and I can’t wait to try some of your others! Thanks so much.
Hi Annie! So glad that you you found my site, and tried my recipe! XOXO
Hi Rosie, I know this is going to be a delicious recipe! Do you think I could assemble the whole mixture, store over night in fridge, pop it into crockpot in the morning and top with remaining cheese? I’m worried about the creamy mixture and uncooked macaroni maybe developing an interesting texture sitting together overnight. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!!
I would just mix everything the day of. It doesn’t take much time. XOXO
Hi Rosie! Thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe. I made it for a work potluck and it was a hit! I have been making oven baked mac and cheese for years, but this Thanksgiving I will be saving oven space with this slow cooker mac and a fried turkey!! I will also use Tillamook sharp cheddar cheese and muenster cheese this time around. Plus a smidge more seasoning.
Thanks again for this holy grail mac & cheese recipe. Happy Holiday to you and yours.
-Taylor
Hi Taylor! Thanks for trying my recipe! XOXO
This recipe looks amazing and I can’t wait to try it. I want to double this recipe and my crockpot is 6 quarts. Will that be big enough?
I think that it should be big enough.
Just in case anyone else should ask the question about a 6 quart being big enough for a double batch. It just fits! I tried it this morning and it worked! Can’t wait to eat it! Thank you for the recipe!
Thanks! I am making it in the morning and doubling using a 6 quart and was nervous it wouldn’t fit. Thanks so much!!!
Thank you for your input, I have been scrolling through the comments & questions looking for this.
Thank U, Thank U, Thank you!
Ive been searching for a great CHHEEESSSSYY mac and cheese. im going to try this for thanksgiving i hope it comes out well!!
Hi I have a question regarding the amount of half and half to use, the recipe calls for 2 & 3/4 cups half and half but in the video it looks more like 1 & 3/4. I already started making it and used the measurements as listed. Hope it’s ok! I also had like half a cup extra noodles in my box so I just threw those in as well so I wouldn’t have to save the last bit, I’ll see how that turns out. It smells great!
Always follow the written recipe.
Hi Rosie. Thank you for sharing this recipe. I plan on making and bringing to our family’s thanksgiving dinner. I would like to one and a half times the recipe. Do you think that would fit into a 5 qt crockpot? Thanks!
I think may need a 6qt Crock-Pot
My family likes the extra sharp flavor at times. Should I stick with Sharp or try the extra sharp? I do not want to over power the recipe. Plan on making this for Thanksgiving and needed a crockpot because I only have 1 oven and it will be used all day for other things.
What do you think sharp or extra sharp cheddar cheese? Thanks for sharing your recipe. Looking forward to trying it.
Hi Judy! I think you should use whatever you family likes. I personally like sharp cheddar. However, if you like extra sharp I say go for it ๐
I have a question because I really want to try this for Thanksgiving it will transport so easily. Do the noodles get too soft is it really mushy?
If you follow the directions the pasta should not be mushy.
I accidentally got Colby jack cheese instead of colby. Will that be ok, or I have some medium cheddar?
I prefer cheddar. If you like colby jack, you an use it. It may not taste as good though.
Hi I want to make this for thanksgiving but won’t have 3 hours. Would it turn out the same if I cooked it on high for 1 1/2 hours?
No, it won’t work.
Loved this recipe. I have a 6 qt oval crockpot. I measured and 1 lb box of elbows is just shy of 4 cups so I bumped the 1/2 &1/2 up to 3 1/4 c. The soup you show is a bonus size which isn’the always available so I just used 2 of the standard 10 3/4 oz cans which was fine because of the extra macaroni.
PLEASE shred your own cheese. Pre-shredded is coated with anti caking powder to keep it from sticking & clumping together in the package. It also prevents the cheese from melting smoothly in recipes like this. Think this is my final search for a mac & cheese recipe.
Definitely subscribing and excited to try more of your recipes!!
Hi Donna! Glad that you like the recipe!
Hi Rosie, can I use 1 10-3/4 ounce of cheddar cheese soup or do I need to use more than one can of this size? I could only find the smaller size. Making this today or tomorrow so you would be my hero if you were able to get back to me. Thank you Love! XO
Hi Gina! Try buying two cans. Use 1 1/2 cans . Xoxo
Love Love LOVEEEEE! I made this today for our office potluck! Great potluck idea! All my co-workers enjoyed it! I was nervous about making crock pot mac and cheese but it came out so delicious! I used Pepper Jack cheese and Sharp Cheddar. Everyone loved the zesty kick. Also great idea using the cheddar cheese soup! Thank you for this recipe girl! Now my mom is requesting that I make it for Thanksgiving ๐
So glad that you liked the recipe!
Adding to the recipe would have to be your call.
SO I made the mac n cheese per the recipe ( i used pre-shredded instead of block cheese) however I feel like my mac n cheese isn’t creamy enough. Suggestion on how to make it creamier now ( after the fact)? I’m thinking of adding a block of cream cheese, what do you think?
Oh darn. However, I did warn ya. Not sure if adding cream cheese would help. It may make it worst, as far as taste.
Can I mix everything together without cooking it and tracel an hour to my destination then cook it? Would it be ok?
Hi Jamie. Sure.
Hi Rosie, i’m new to your site. I am looking forward to trying some recipes . I wanted to know, if you had a preference for the baked or slow cooked mac n cheese ? Are there any noted differences between them ? thanks , Dana
Hi Dana, I love all my mac and cheese recipes. However, when I cook for large crowds I prefer to use the slow cooker mac and cheese. Less ingredients, less fuss.
I will double recipe.. wondering how many ounces is 6 cups of macaroni?
Sorry. You’ll have to measure it out.
This is in my crockpot now! Can’t wait to try it. Happy Thanksgiving!
This is currently in my crockpot! Can’t wait to try it. Happy Thanksgiving!
I am impressed!!! I have always used Paula Deen’s recipe but half of audience like and other was inconclusive. But this recipe is a winner for sure. It still has the traditional taste to it that the holiday crowd enjoy!!! I will keep this as a new ingredient and modern traditional way of making baked mac and cheese. Bravo!
I made this today and it came out great! Creamy Mac and cheese. My mom always makes the old fashioned mac n cheese and I showed her a lil something today with this recipe lol. We love it thanks!! Happy Thanksgiving
OMG…..J made the crock pot mac n cheese for Thanksgiving 2016, and it was soooooooooooooooo GOOD. My parents loved it and I was SUPER impressed with the outcome of it! The grocery store that I went to didn’t have any colby jack cheese so I just substituted for another cheese. Needless to say, I plan on making it again! Thanks for sharing your recipe!
Hey Rosie I cooked this in my crock pot the other day it was great. I’m making it again today but I have something still cooking in my crock pot. Can j boil the pasta and ad the cheese and sauce to the cooked pasta already ???
Sure , you can try that.
I tried it and it was amazing!!! Your the best thanks Rosie it was a big hit I had to hide the rest for myself so no one would get into it
I made this for Thanksgiving and it was a big hit! Everyone loved it!
I finished this with a couple minutes under the broiler to give it that crispy brown, just out of the oven look. It was perfection.
Thank you! I have tried several other crock pot mac & cheese recipes that did not work out so well. This one was perfect! The crockpot is really great for Thanksgiving since the oven gets so full!
Thank you!!!
Thanks for trying my recipe Lynn!
Made this on Thanksgiving. Except I baked it instead. I was pressed for time. It came out great. Everyone loved it. My husband even said it was better than his moms. Very easy to make. Will definitely make again.
I plan on making this tomorrow. How big of a crock pot are you fixing this in? And does it fill it up? I’m tryin to figure out if I will need to double my ingredients to fill mine. I believe I have like a 6qt maybe. Sorry if someone else has posted this there are so many comments. Thank u!
Hi LeAnn! Be sure to watch the video tutorial. XOXO
I made this and it was delicious. I plan to make it again for Christmas dinner.
I am thinking of making this Christmas morning. I live 2 hours away from my familyโs house. I was wondering if I cooked it at home right up to the 3 hours then unplugged it and drove home, how do you think it would do? I canโt just cook it there because we would be ready to eat within an hour of our arrival. Any suggestions?
Hi Rosie! Can’t wait to try this recipe it looks delicious! I don’t have a cheese grater but if I cut up the blocks of cheese into really small squares do you think it will still cook okay? I really want to use the blocks instead of the packaged pre shredded cheese
Hi Christie! Sure, that will be fine! XOXO
WHAT SIZE CROCK POT DO YOU USE?
a 6qt will work
What is the smallest size crockpot I should use with this recipe?
4 quarts
What is the smallest size crockpot I could use with this recipe?
If I double the batch how big should my crock pot be?
at least 6 quarts
Made this yesterday. It was wonderful. I can’t tell you how many macaroni & cheese recipes I have tried. Couldn’t be easier. Thank you
Thanks for trying my recipe! XOXO
Will this recipe fit in a 4 quart crock pot?
Yes, it would ๐
Hi I’d like to make this for an office party tomorrow because it looks so creamy! Would like to ask about the 1/2 & 1/2. Your recipe states 2&3/4 cups but in the video it looks like only 1 3/4 cups?
Follow the written recipe, not what it looks like in the video. ๐
Hi, Rosie ~ Do you think Rigatoni pasta would be okay to use in this recipe? I have a 5 qt slow cooker.
Sure. That should be okay.
I made this mac and cheese for Thanksgiving and will be making it again for Christmas dinner. It’s definitely our go to recipe now. Everything about it was so delicious and so simple. I followed the recipe exact.
Sure beats that baked monstrosity my sister in law used to bring lol. Thanks for a great blog!!
I made a double recipe for a pot luck at work – yes I literally made it at work. Threw everything in the crockpot in the morning, turned it on, and it was ready for lunch. I was somewhat hesitant because you never know how things will come out when making a new recipe and I had no “plan B”. It was fantastic, just about the only dish that got completely eaten. Not only do I recommend it but others have asked for another appearance of this. Great recipe – a keeper for sure.
So glad that you liked the recipe! XOXO
How large was your crockpot? I want to double the recipe and have a 6qt. Do you think this will be large enough?
This week will be the first time I’ve ever hosted turkey dinner (yay Christmas!). Realized I didn’t have anything “kid friendly” on the menu and needed a mac and cheese. So glad I came across your recipe! From the reviews, it’s sure to be a hit. Wish me luck in the kitchen! I love to cook but find timing dishes quite tricky. Glad I’ll have this to set and forget. Merry Christmas ๐
Enjoy the recipe Abby! Happy holidays!
I made this recipe last week for my Office Christmas Luncheon. The mac and cheese was a hit!! I used Gouda, Havarti and Kraft Triple Cheddar (shredded vermont white cheddar, sharp and mild cheddar with cream cheese). Yes I used one package of already shredded cheese and it didn’t hurt the taste. The only thing I did do different other than the cheese selection is add Cayenne pepper to spice it up a bit. Other than that, this recipe will be used again for Christmas Dinner for my family.
I know this sounds like a crazy question…
I am bringing this as well as scalloped potatoes to the family dinner on Christmas day, would this mixture work to make the scalloped potatoes layering potatoes, onions and cheese sauce, with longer cooking time of course?
I actually never tried it with potatoes. I couldn’t tell ya.
Hi Rosie,
Tried this last week, and it was delicious. I wasn’t sure how it would turn out because I’m not the most experienced cook, but it was perfect. Will make it again and try different cheeses.
Thanks for the videos as well. They’re very helpful.
Rosie
Hi Rosie! ( love your name!) Glad that you liked the recipe! XOXO
Can you have this recipe ready to go the evening before and then cook it in the morning? Leave for work at 3AM and the pot luck is at 9ish. Thanks for the help
I actually never tried that.
Hi Rosie, I was told not to make a new recipe for guests or outings. I made this first time for a work lunch today and went home with an empty crock pot. 5 STARS! I’m glad I found your site. Thanks, Joel
Hi Joel! I’m glad that you had success!
Found out yesterday about today’s work potluck. Found this recipe on Google. Grabbed my crockpot this morning and stopped on my way to work to get the ingredients. Cooked it right at my desk! Could not have been easier! And everyone is raving about the dish! Had several requests for the recipe. Thanks for saving my butt! Looking forward now to trying some of your other recipes.
You made it at your DESK?! YOU ROCK KATE!!!!
This is delicious! And I love not having to cook the noodles!
I’ve made this 3 times already each time using different cheeses (and adding bacon ๐ ) and my husband is now obsessed with it! lol Soo glad I found this recipe cause I can’t stand boxed mac & cheese.
This is an easy, but delicious mac-n-cheese recipe. The family loved it and it was even better the next day. Thank you sharing.
Trying this tonight for my New Years party! Looks awesome. Happy New Year!!
Enjoy! Happy New Year!
Hi Rosie, I just had a quick question. My crackpot setting are for 2,4,6,8, and 10 hours for high or low. Since the recipe asks for 3 hours on low, can I put it for 2 hours and leave the rest warm? If I could leave it for 4 hours on low I would but I have church tomorrow morning and I need it by noon to be ready….
You need to cook it for 3 hours. Set it for four hours, but only cook it for 3.
Best crock pot mac and cheese ever – bonus that you don’t boil the noodles first.
Thanks so much!
I made this today and it came out perfect!! Was shy 3/4s on the half and half, and bought Colby Jack cheese
Insteaf2 of Colby , it still came out good! Im servicing it with your roast chicken.
Thank you
Goad that you were able to work it out! XOXO
Love the recipe and have made a couple time with one change. (If you like a little spice) I changed the Colby cheese to Pepper Jack cheese. Everything else just the same and comes out perfect every time. Never any leftovers in our house.
Thanks for trying my recipe Jerry!
Hello Rosie,
This recipe looks so delicious that I’m going to make it as a side for the Super Bowl but I have a silly question. If I wanted to double this recipe, would I double EVER ingredient? Sorry for the rookie question… I just don’t want to mess it up!
Many thanks,
Jason
Hi Jason. Yes, you will have to double everything.
Could I add bacon? I’m guessing it should be cooked bacon?
If you choose. Yes, it would have to be cooked.
Made this today for a work potluck. I used pre shredded cheese and I thought it was fine both taste- and texture-wise. I used smoked paprika which is one of my favorite spices. Only one tiny spoonful left aft the end of the day! Woohoo! Great recipe!
Hi Rosie – I made this recipe yesterday, fresh grated cheese, and only added garlic powder, paprika and pepper, definitely no salt needed. This dish was the hit of our potluck!! Glad to add this one to my favs!!
Rosie. Girl. Yes.
Thank you for this. Made this for a work potluck, and everyone loved it!
Hi Rosie! I’m very excited to try this recipe, I saw a similar recipe on Facebook that required eggs! Have you ever added eggs to your dish? I grew up eating mac and cheese with eggs so I’m a little hesitant to eat it without them!! LOL
I have southern baked macaroni and cheese recipe, and I use eggs in it. This recipe, does not require eggs:-)
Made this for a work pitch in. I was a bit nervous to take it in and feed it to co-workers without ever having tried it before. HUGE HIT!!! Lots of compliments and no leftovers made it home. Which meant I just had to make another batch to enjoy all to myself! ๐ I have bad luck with most recipes I find online, but after this success, I definitely plan on trying more of yours! Thank you!
This the ooiest, gooiest, and yummiest Mac and Cheese ever!! So delicious, and completely fail proof if followed correctly. I made this with Rosie’s slow cooked Beef Brisket, It too was perfection and soo easy. This is my go to site when wanting a great recipe!
Made this for Sunday dinner and it was absolutelyyyyyy delicious!!! Super easy. Sop excited for leftovers!
So delicious! I made this to accompany our New Years dinner and I am making it again. This is so good and cheesy and creamy!
I made this last night, and it’s a-ma-zing!!! Everyone kept raving about how good it was! I made a double recipe, and 3 hours was the perfect amount of time. One helpful hint: If you plan to keep in warm for an extended period of time at a party like I did, turn it from the “low” setting down to “warm” or it will dry out. Keep extra half-and-half on hand if that happens. A little splash of that, a quick stir, and it’s back to being perfect! For the record, I used bagged shredded cheese, mixed all ingredients together, and just poured it all into the crockpot at once. Perfect! This recipe is a keeper!!! Delish! Thanks for sharing!
I forgot the can of soup! Help!!!!
Sorry. The can of soup is need for this recipe.
Hi Rosie – I would really like to use this recipe for a friend’s birthday dinner. She LOVES smoked gouda. Could I use smoked gouda instead of the cheddar or colby? If so, which one? Same amount? or just add it? thanks! this looks so good and easy!
Hi Erin! I highly suggest leaving the cheddar, but you can replace the colby with smoked gouda. The same amount.
Hi Rosie,
I donโt know why I let the Womenโs Ministry ladies talk me into making the Mac & Cheese (you know I use the box stuff). I needed a recipe to cook in the crock pot to serve after church, so I google’d, and God sent me you! Deacon Delicious turned his nose up at crock pot mac & cheese until his wife tasted it. Then he wanted to know โhow you make that?โ (I still havenโt told him.) It was the best Iโve ever made. I doubled the recipe and none was left. The texture after 3 hours was absolutely perfect and the tasteโฆ.scrumptious! Itโs my new Go-To. And Iโm trying out your other recipes as well. You are very gifted. Love you, Girl!
Heyyy Caryn!!! LOL!! Your comment made me smile! Thank you so much for trying my recipe! XOXOXOX
Have you ever made this in a Dutch oven on the stove?
Hi Jessica! No, I haven’t.
Making it for dinner tonight but I am using Gluten Free noodles. Looks good! Great tutorial video!
Tried this tonight and it’s delicious! I’ll need to double it for a party next month. I know it can be doubled, but has there been a definite answer on how much longer it would cook?
Will a double batch fit in a 6 quart slow cooker?
I think so ๐
I am madly in love with this recipe! I made it a few weeks ago, and it’s currently cooking in my crock pot as we speak. Smells amazing when it cooks. It’s fun to make too. I love, love, love it!! Thank you, Rosie!
You are so welcome Bridget! Thank YOU for trying my recipe XOXO
I actually heard about it on a NJ radio station. They were raving about it on the morning show and provided a link to your recipe on their website. And that’s how I found your wonderful site!!
Woohoo!!!! How cool is that?! I’m glad that you found me Bridget. Don’t be a stranger! XOXO
If doubling the recipe, should I increase cooking time, or leave as-is?
Maybe add an addition 30 minutes.
I made this today and it was AMAZING!! I omitted the paprika and I used Gouda instead of Colby. My family LOVED it and I love how it had the consistency of baked Mac. Not wet or soupy at all!! I used unsalted butter so I added some kosher salt and I used a 10 oz can of the Campbell’s soup.
Thanks for trying my recipe!
Thanks for the Great Recipe!! I killed it today….I should have doubled it!
Thanks for trying my recipe!
Hi Rosie!
I Made This A Few Weeks Ago And OMG, I Fell In Love.
Everything Was Gone The First Night. However, I Wanted To Know Whenever I Do Make This Again, If I Have Leftovers, How Would I Store It? I Wouldn’t Want To Lose The Creaminess And Make It Dry.
HELP!!
You’d store it in the refrigerator, and just warm it up as usual ๐
YOU ARE A GENIUS! I have a 10 y/o grandson, RaShawn who orders mac’n’cheese for his Kid’s Meal almost everytime we go out to eat (& you know that stuff is straight outta the Kraft box – ugh)! So, I made this to show him what REAL mac’n’cheese should taste like & our whole family is hooked! But I was wicked & used heavy whipping cream instead of half & half! I have since made it twice for potlucks & although each time I doubled the recipe THERE WERE NO LEFT OVERS! Love all your recipes – do you have any chicken & dumpling secrets? manga
Hi Linda! I’m so glad that you, and your family like my recipe!! You’re the second person to ask for a chicken and dumpling recipe tonight- therefore, I will record one this week. Stay tuned! XOXO
This looks perfect! We are having a BBQ/Swim Party this weekend and I usually make the no bake mac n cheese in the oven – but didn’t want to have to mess with anything while enjoying time with guests in the pool ๐ Thank you!
Does using packaged shredded cheese make it gritty?
Packaged shredded cheese doesn’t melt as well. They have added ingredients.
Thank you!
I was looking for an easy Mac n cheese for a luncheon at work and ran across this one. I doubled it and they only thing I did different was to put bacon cruchies (from pre-cooked bacon) on top after cooking. My crock pot was scraped clean in 30 minutes! Everyone loved it! Was very creamy and cheesy. Thank โyou!!!!
I’m in the middle of a kitchen
Remodel with no way to really cook. I was looking for slow cooker recipes and came across this gem. I made this with grillled burgers and corn for our Fourth of July BBQ. Thank you! This was excellent, easy and very comforting! Who needs an oven?? Everyone loved it!!!
So glad that you liked the recipe Shelley!
can this be halved? if so do I reduce cooking time.
Yes, it can be cut in half. Not much time will be reduced.
hello how are you? I making this on Friday to be served Sunday afternoon.. Should i freeze it and then reheat
in the oven covered
Or leave it in the refrig and then put in oven Sunday ? What temp in the oven and for how long?
Thank you .
It is best to make it the day of
Hi Rosie,
I have a question about the soup. Your recipe calls for a 15 ounce can of soup but the Campbells only comes in 10 ounces. Am I suppose to use 1.5 cans or is the 15 ounce a typo?
Yes, buy enough for 15 oz.
Wow! good catch! I am just making it with one can as that is what I bought. I hope it doesn’t make too much of a difference.
Hi Rosie,
I’m so glad I found this recipe! I’m making it for our church’s annual picnic tomorrow. Being from the South, I love providing our congregation with good Southern cooking. They love it! Thanks for sharing this recipe!
Thank you for coming by Shelia! XOXO
This looks delicious! I was wondering if my 6qt slow cooker will hold a doubled recipe?
I want to add a crisp to it. Do you think topping it with bread crumbs will do the trick??
Hi Dia! Usually breadcrumbs work, but since this is in the slow cooker, I’m not so sure.
Hi Rosie,
I made this for work potluck and it turned out great. I did adjust and used heavy cream instead of half and half, but I used too much butter so will need to adjust that next time. Well wish me luck I am attempting to make it again only this time I am mapmaking in roaster to feed at least 50 people!! *Fingerscrossed Would I need more time?
Hi Dia! You may need to add 30 more minutes or so, but it should work! XOXO
This sounds amazing, I need to doube it for a Pot Luck dinner for a crowd. Has anyone ever tried adding smoked sausage to the recipe? Any feed back would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
You can definitely double this recipe ๐
Hi rosie I made this for work and it was amazing and a huge hit with everyone. I want to double the recipe but how long should I cook it or should I turn it to high?
Please offer your suggestions.
Glad that you liked the recipe!
this is probably a dumb question but do you measure the Macaroni with a measuring cup? So I measure 3 cups in a measuring cup? It just looked like more then 3 cups in the video.
Yes, the written ingredients are correct. Never go by what it looks like in the video. ๐
,I made this once before about a year ago and it was amazing my guests loved it and ate it all up ( it was a large family birthday party) . I was wondering if I add a little more cheese should I add a little more 1/2 a nd 1/2 to keep it from getting too dry at the very bottom….does that work?>
Hi Beth! I’m glad that you liked the recipe. You can add more cheese if you like ๐
making this today. I meant to ask you do you stir it at all during the cooking? I’ll let you know how it turns out. Thanks for the recipe. I look at several and yours looked the best and easiest.
No, I just let it cook. BUT – you can stir if you’d like ๐
This was great. However I only needed to cook it for 2 hours because my crock pot cooked it a little faster. It was sticky and really thick so I had to add more half and half but it was stiff great! Next time I’ll make sure to put it in for less time – Thanks for sharing this recipe!
This was absolutely delicious!!!!! My household loved it. Will be making this again and again. Thanks for sharing!!!
Glad that you liked the recipe Lesa! XOXO
OMG I made your mac and cheese for our Potluck at work today, EVERYONE LOVED IT and now want the recipe. I added season salt and Sharp Cheddar and Monterrey Jack cheese. Soooooo good!!!!
Glad that you liked the recipe!
I made this for a work potluck. It was a hit! I doubled the recipe and it turned out great.
Glad that you liked the recipe!
Hello Rosie. I have two question is the butter for this recipe salted or unsalted butter and for the Cheese’s if I’m not able to find the Colby cheese what other cheese would you recommend.
Thanks!
You can use either, as far as butter. You can substitute the colby cheese with more cheddar, or try adding your favorite cheese.
Thanks for the response and suggestions!
I don’t have to add paprika do I, If I don’t like it?
No, you can omit the paprika if you’d like ๐
Hey! I’m going to make this for Thanksgiving, can you use any pasta? like shells? or does it have to be elbow?
For best results stick to the recipe listed.
Thank you Rosie! ๐
I want to put this in the oven. What temperature and how long to cook it? I know I have to cook the macaroni before I put it in the oven.
Try 30-40 minutes, on 375 F.
Hi, I am going to make this for Thanksgiving for a large crowd so I was going to double the recipe. If I double the recipe should I add more cooking time?
Hi Ali! You can add another 30 minutes , or so. Just keep an eye on it. ๐
Hi Rosie, I will be making this Mac and Cheese for Thanksgiving tomorrow ๐ Can’t wait….
Enjoy!
Dear Rosie: girl you saved me. Your yam recipe sounded so good that I explored your website and found this. I will be making both the yams and the mac and cheese for Thanksgiving! Thanks dear heart! You are the best. Didn’t see where to give thumbs up though.. Could you just note that. Definitely want to help!! Mia
Glad that you found my blog!
Hi Rosie, just realized my hubby picked up the wrong cheeses. He got the ones that are shredded in the bag and not the block ones. Will this not work?
It will work, but the cheeses don’t melt as well as block cheese. It will still be ok though.
Hmmmm then I will probably now wait to make it for Christmas because I want to make sure I get the block cheeses to do it right.
Hi! just wondering, what temperature should we put the crock pot at? low or high?? and there’s no water required??
Hi Victoria, the recipe and directions are listed.
I made this for Thanksgiving, and it was a hit! Thanks for providing a simple yet delicious mac and cheese recipe. My daughter doesn’t like Velveeta so this was perfect.
Thanks for trying my recipe!
I just tried the recipe, however it stuck to the cooker and was dry after only two hours. Taste good was to try again please help. What did I do wrong?
Hmmmm. That’s odd. This is a really most macaroni and cheese recipe, it shouldn’t be dry at all. Also, if you have a problem with foods sticking to your slow cooker, try using slow cooker liners or nonstick spray prior to adding the ingredients. ๐
Delicious! Family loved it! I followed the recipe exactly and it turned out perfect. I will definitely be making it again. I think it’d be good to add some jalapeรฑos or green chilies to it as well but great as is.
I have NEVER been able to make mac and cheese! Thanks to your crockpot recipe, which I did on the oven, I am now the master of mac n cheese in my family. I gave it a trial run for Thanksgiving 2017. My family absolutely loves it! You are now my go to person for quick, easy, simple and realistic recipes. You make it so easy. You offer tons of suggestions for substitutions. I love I heart recipes! You rock-Rosie!
Thanks for trying Lisa!
I just tried this and it was delicious! I decided to make some modifications the second time I made it. I needed to make enough for a party of about 20 guests, but as main dish as I was creating a Mac & Cheese Bar with a bunch of toppings. I pretty much doubled the recipe in my crock pot and did two crock pots full (4qt & 4.5qt) and cooked ea crock pot for 3 hrs. It was the perfect amount for 20 guests as a main dish. Here are the changes that I made first to the SINGLE recipe before I doubled it. Instead of 15 oz of the condensed cheese soup I did 5 ounces of the cheese condensed soup + 5 oz of the NACHO cheese condensed soup. For the elbow noodles instead of 3 cups I bumped it up to 32oz (I think that is about 6 cups) To make it a hair healthier, I used margarine instead of butter and fat-free half-and-half.
Making this now and canโt wait until itโs done (my 3rd time making it). I LOVE your recipes! Everything Iโve made has been awesome. My favorite are the baked turkey wings – YUMMY!! I could eat those everyday! Thank you so much for sharing your recipes. Look forward to seeing you on Food Network with your own show soon!
Thanks so much for trying my recipes T.
Question? I have about 100 people to feed for a event coming up. Can I make this the day before and then transfer it to glass dish and reheat the day of? I hope this makes sense lol
Sure, you can transfer it once done.
Hello there i wanted to know when making this in the oven do you cook the pasta first them mix every thing in and how long is the cook time in the oven
Yes- cook the pasta first. Then bake until the mac and cheese is golden brown.
Wow! Super easy & soooo good. A hit with kids AND adults! I received lots of compliments & some even said it tasted like Luby’s mac n cheese. I used margarine instead of butter, doubled the salt, & I used 1/2 whipping cream & 1/2 whole milk instead of half and half. Since I needed it quick, I boiled the macaroni in a pot until it was ALMOST done then I drained & dumped it in the Crock Pot. I mixed the cooked pasta with the sauce, then added the remaining cheese on top & cooked on HIGH for 45 minutes. Perfect!! I kept it on WARM at the party. This would also be great baked in the oven!
Wow! This was so delish! I made it for Easter & i received so many compliments. Thank you for sharing!
My Grandson loves mac & cheese. However, making a recipe that feeds 10 is FAR too much to “test out” on my Grandson. Rosie, if I were to HALF the recipe… first, would doing so be advisable… secondly, are there any modifications to the recipe (other than cutting the amount of each item in half)) AND especially to the COOKING TIME that I should make? Thank you in advance for your reply!
Hi William! You can definitely half the recipe. I would stick to the same time, because the pasta needs to cook, but keep an eye on it jus to be safe ๐
Weird question, does anyone have an approximate calorie count for a single portion of this? Making it for a group and a couple health conscious friends want to know .
No, sorry!
Great, easy recipe. Perfect for a side dish for BBQ! Also great to take to pot luck dinners. I have made it twice and it is always well liked. Thank you!
I completely forgot to get the cheese soup!!! I’m so mad because we have an event today. Could I use Velveeta cheese as a substitute?
For best results, use the ingredients listed.
I’m planning on using shells for the noodles. Should I reduce the time for these?
No, it should not effect the time.
Made this for a pot luck at work and everyone just loved it! Thank you!
Thanks for trying!
Made this for a family cookout and everyone loved it!! Thanks for the recipe ๐
P.S. i bought way too many blocks of cheese, so looks like I need to make this like 3 more times soon!!
Love this recipe, my new go to for mac n cheese! Thanks for sharing!
I have to admit I was skeptical that this would produce anything edible but it is going to be my new go to mac and cheese. Easy to make and crazy good. Thank you so much.
It was soooooooo good. You will definitely be happy. Everyone at work absolutely liked it. So many compliments and no leftovers left to take home. I doubled the recipe…and it fit perfect. I did leave on for 30 extra minutes…just to soften the noodles a little more…but it is good either way. Thank you so much for this rescipe. A true winner.
This recipe is AMAZING. So far I have already used this recipe 4 times, and every time it comes out creamy, cheesy, and tasty! Thank you so much for sharing this recipe Rosie. I just absolutely love it!
Sometimes if im in a time crunch ill crock things on hi for about half the time it takes on low. Can i do that with this recipe? Thanks!
Absolutely!
When doubling the recipe in a 6-qt crockpot, should I stir at all while it is cooking?
Hi Mary. It would be the same steps ๐
Hello Rosie! ๐
When I came across your recipe for crock pot Mac and cheese, I knew I had to try this! I cooked this for my work potluck, and it was gone so fast! I love love love this Mac and cheese! Itโs creamy, cheesy, and the perfect consistency. I made your dish at work. The prep time was so less than 10 min.
Glad that it was a success!
Hi Rosie –
We are so excited to try this recipe! We are making it tomorrow for a preschool Thanksgiving Party and again for our family Thanksgiving dinner Thursday. We scoured the internet and this recipe looks so good. I love that we donโt have to precook the pasta.
We are going to double the recipe and have a 7qt crockpot. Do you think this will be big enough?
Thanks!
Hi there! I โ thinkโ it will be big enough
Hey Rosie, I want to half the recipe. I’m only cooking for 3 people. I’m also making a big pan of your baked mac & cheese which is amazing by the way. I want to do a small amount of the crock pot mac & cheese. I’m so excited to surprise my sister with the crock pot mac for thanksgiving. Thanks

Awesome! Enjoy! ๐
Hey there, does this need to be stirred periodically, or simply just let it cook for 3 hours with no interruptions? Sorry if this has been answered, I searched through for a while and couldn’t find it.
Brianna
No need to stir ๐
Hi Rosie. Can this dish be frozen ahead of time for Thanksgiving? Thank you.
No, don’t recommend it.
Can you use ziti instead of elbow macaroni? Thanks!
For best results, stick to the recipe listed ๐
Hi Rosie! So looking forward to making this! Just a quick question… my crockpot has 2 different low settings – one for 8 hours and one for 10 hours. I assume the 8 hour setting is higher power than the 10 hour setting. Which do you recommend for the 3 hour cooking time?
3 hours on low.
Hi Rosie!! Thanks so much for sharing this recipe, itโs fantastic! Every time I make this itโs an absolute hit. I made two crockpots worth yesterday for thanksgiving and there were no leftovers!
Quick question, so the Campbellโs soup at my grocery store only comes in a 10 1/2 size so I usually use 1 and a half cans but when I watch your video my half and half and condensed soup mixture always looks so much more โliquidyโ than yours. It still comes out perfect but just wondering if Iโm doing anything wrong. I measure 2 3/4 cups of half and half exactly.
Thanks a bunch!!
Jena
Hi Jenna! I think youโre doing it right. You can probably add a little more cheese if anything
Matte this at tonight for a get tigers at my sisters. Such a big hit. Thank you. I had to add a title more cream. But still so good
Does the recipe require you to stir the pasta as it is cooking? I would hate for the pasta to stick?
You can stir if you’d like.
This is the second recipe Iโve made of yours and they both turned out amazing. Your recipes are so easy to follow and I intend on making more of them!
I just made this and I have a newer crockpot that seems to get way too hot and cook too fast on low. I checked it at 2 hours and it was already scorched and curdling. Frustrating!
Iโll try it again another time but Iโll really have to watch it. Newer is not always better.
Thanks for pointing that out! It depends on the crockpot! ๐
I made this for a church dinner and had several people ask for the recipe…and it was totally gone by the end of the night! Really good! I’m making it again for our church Christmas party tonight!
I doubled the recipe and brought it to a party. It was the only food at the party that ran out! People loved it! I am making it again for the same crowd for an upcoming birthday party, people asked me to make it and asked for the recipe. I am also making it again for a work party. For those asking about doubling the recipe, I did not have to increase the cook time. I have a standard 6 quart (Low, High, Warm). I also added more cheese simply because I had shredded extra and it was delicious. This recipe got me hooked on no longer buying pre-shredded cheese. Buying block cheese and shredding it yourself tastes so much better than pre-shredded cheese and it does make a better mac and cheese.
This recipe is amazing, and I’m a southern girl with lots of Mac and Cheese making experience! So easy, followed the recipe other than leaving out paprika due to allergies. Creamy, tasty and I’ll never make Mac and Cheese any other way. Definitely check after 2 hours, mine was starting to burn a bit at 2.5 hours but my slow cooker runs hot. Thank you!
Omg! I made this and did my little twist to it. I don’t want to make it in the oven anymore. This was the cheesiest my Mac and cheese has ever been.
looks soooooo good, do you think I could 4 times this and cook it on low in an 20qt electric roaster?
Yes, that should be fine ๐
I love your recipes please keep them coming.
Thanks! Will do ๐
I made this for my boyfriend and his friends at our Super Bowl Party and it was a huge hit! I have made it at least 5 times since then. So good and so ridiculously easy to make, thank you so much!
I just want to say kudos to you, Rosie, for replying to all these comments…especially all the questions about the recipe which it already says IN the recipe! ๐
That said, I will try this soon! It looks delicious!
LOL!! Thanks Martha!
Hello, If I double the recipe, does it also mean that I need to double the time for it took cook? So 6 hours in the slow cooker? Hope to hear back from you soon. Thanks!
No. You wouldn’t have to double the time.
This recipe is scrumptious! My boyfriends mom sent me the link when I asked for her recipe thinking it was a family recipe. Boy was I surprised! Recently made it for a work party and added a can of green chilies- it gave it wonderful little kick and everyone raved about it.
I have been making this crockpot Mac and cheese recipe for at least two years now. Just have never written a review until today. It goes over so big with my family also extended family. I have it in my crockpot now getting ready to take to my little six year old grandsons birthday party dinner. This is the dish everyone asks me to bring for any family function. Even my 87 year old mom said it is the best macaroni and cheese sheโs ever eaten! Sheโs even fixed it to take to potlucks at her church. Thanks for such a delicious and easy recipe.
After seeing this recipe numerous times, I finally decided to try it. I will with 100% certainty be making it again. It turned out WONDERFUL. Very simple to make, and not dry at all. Everyone loved it. Even making it in a slow cooker, it reminded me of baked mac and cheese. Very good recipe!!!!!!!!!
So glad that you liked my recipe!! Thanks for trying Francine!
You slayed it with this recipe!!!! Made it for guests and they all asked for the recipe. You have the most amazing recipes I’ve never tried . None that havn’t been top notch. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Cynthia!!
Hi Rosie, I made this recipe and my family LOVED it! You mentioned that I could add some garlic & onion powder. How much would you suggest of each? I don’t want it to be overpowering.
Hi Nikki, you would have to play around with it to get it how you want it. Just add a little at a time hun ๐
This was cheesealicious!!!! So cheesy and good. Everyone loved it. I will be making this a lot!
OMG this Mac & cheese is SO good. Living in the South people here put eggs in Mac & cheese and it curdles and is just not that good. This is a pot of creamy goodness. For holidays I make it as written but for a weeknight dinners and potlucks I half the recipe and use whole milk. Everyone loves it.
Hi Rosie! Could I make this in a 2.6 quart crock pot?
Hi Holly! No, it would fit ๐
This is now our go to recipe. Had a heck of a time finding a can of the soup (I’m in a very small town in NY at the Canadian border). Had to sub a can of cheese dip. It worked well enough. Have you ever tried adding imitation crab to this?
Iโm so happy I found this. Making for the second time today for dinner with our neighbors. The first time was this past Thanksgiving. So good!! Thank you, Rosie! Do you have a Facebook or Instagram page? Would love to follow you!
Hello! I have both Facebook is under I Heart Recipes, instagram @iheartrecipes
Made this crockpot mac and cheese and it is delicious! So easy to prepare, short cooking time and extra creamy. I followed directions, only 1 can of cheddar cheese soup. We used 3 cups of sharp cheddar, not using the colby. I added a bit more pepper when serving. Itโs a keeper, perfect for family dinners. Thank you!
My family love, love, LOVES this recipe! Only change is we add a can of nacho cheese sauce in addition to all the other cheese. Iโve added extra cheese every time and thereโs never to much. With cheese, the more you add the merrier, perfection!
This was the biggest hit at a surprise birthday bbq. I saw someone go back and get seconds and it was an entire plate of this mac and cheese lol!!! I will say that it needs to be served somewhat quickly, sitting in the crockpot on warm too long dries it out and the noodles start to split so time this perfectly! I made it too early and had to add some half and half to re-hydrate it. Obviously still amazing, but felt bad the guests didn’t get to experience the perfection I did when it was just done cooking.
My family and I loved the recipe Rosie! Thanks for sharing. Quick question can I make it in half the time on high? Sorry if this is a repeat question, I tried to find it in another comment but couldnโt. Thanks!
I’ve actually been using this recipe for Mac-n-cheese since 2016 when I found it as it is the best tasting macaroni and cheese recipe that I ever had, whenever I say I’m making crockpot mac-n-cheese I witness a flourish of cheers. Thank you for this recipe.
Thank you for trying my recipe!! XOXO
First of all, something has to be outstanding for me to even bother commenting. This recipe is a winner. Absolutely delicious and easy. This is one of my very favorite Mac and cheese recipes so thank you. Secondly, you have the patience of a saint to answer all the questions! It’s like some people didn’t even bother to read the instructions, which are very clear. I will be trying more of your recipes!
LOL!!! Thanks Jennifer! XOXO
I made this last year as a side dish for one of our holiday meals. My college-age son said, “Oh, man, this slaps!” I took that as a compliment. It makes an excellent macaroni-and-cheese. Fast forward to this coming Thanksgiving, and I told my husband I needed to go look for “that” macaroni and cheese recipe. It’s delicious!! This is probably the only macaroni-and-cheese recipe I would ever consider making in a crockpot. I followed the directions exactly as they were written, and it’s just perfect. Thanks for this great recipe!!!
This is absolutely the best Mac and Chrese recipe I have tried. It is the only one my 12 year old son will eat.
This crockpot mac and cheese recipe is one of my FAVORITES! I love my crockpot and I never thought I could cook pasta in it. Lol My roomies and I love it!
Will this feed 7 adults and 3 kids ? Or should I double it ? Thanks
Hello, I think it should be enough for them… I think! LOL!
Hi Rosie. How can we make this a Seafood Mac & Cheese?
Hi Debbie! Check out my Seafood Mac & Cheese recipe HERE.
I’m making tonight at the firehouse. Just doubled the recipe for 9 folks. Ill let you know how it goes!
Hi Rosie,
I want to make this for a large work gathering and looking to TRIPLE the recipe. A couple of questions:
1. Can I use a roaster pan instead of crock pot (for size of contents)?
2. If so, do you know what temp setting I should use that correlates with LOW on a crock pot?
3. What would be your recommended time?
Thank you – I have read these comments and the great reviews so I am excited to try this!!
Hi Cindy! You can definitely cook this in a large roaster pan. Be sure to cook the pasta before hand. No need to cook it on low, you can bake it on 350 F for about 40 minutes.
thank you for the recipe
Nice recipe. I’ll tell my mom to make this
I made this one time when we had a family gathering and since then both of my daughters have asked me for the recipe and I’ve made it a couple of more times this is the best mac and cheese recipe I’ve ever tried in a crock pot I also cooked it in the oven too
Is it possible to triple the recipe in one large crockpot?
Hi Nancy. Absolutely.
I love this recipe and shared it with my sisters.
Sharing is caring!!! Thank you so much! XOXO
I could turn that into a meal. I can add a sliced baked chicken breast on top of that deliciousness.
Can I double this recipe?
Hi Andrea! You sure can!
I started making this a few years ago for Holiday dinners, everyone LOVES it! The only negative, is that it is SO good, that even after doubling the recipe, there are STILL never any leftovers!
So easy and so good. I’ve made it to recipe which was fantastic. This weekend I will be making some modifications because I have a bunch of left over cheese from a party.
Thank you SO much for your recipe. This has been a staple in my family for years and everyone asks for it for the holidays! Just curious, do you use salted or unsalted butter? Thanks!!!
I usually use salted butter, but unsalted is fine. XOXO
This is one of the best and most simple recipes I use
This recipe is the bomb! Set it & Forget it!
A hit once again! Everyone loved slow cooker mac & cheese. They couldn’t believe how simple it was to make. This is the best slow cooker recipe out there!
My Neice made this for Thanksgiving dinner. So delicious! Perfect blend of cheese types and textures and somehow the way the Mac and cheese was packed made it a unique take of the Mac n cheese. Great recipe!
Thank You so much for showing your soul food Mac & cheesy in crookpot style.
Love it!
If you double the recipe do you need to allow extra cook time?
Maybe an extra few minutes if any…
So…. I’ve been making this every year, for probably the last 3 maybe 4 years. I LOVE southern macaroni and cheese (I’m from NC-and that’s how we do it)….. When I tell y’all that THIS is the BEST AND CLOSEST AND EASIEST AND CHEAPEST thing you’ll get to baked Mac and cheese! AND IT IS DELICIOUS!!! It’s EVERYBODY’S favorite every time I make it. Whatever you do, don’t use the pre-shredded cheese-it doesn’t taste quite the same (although pre-shredded cheese made with cream cheese is probably the closest thing but I’d still recommend shredding your own cheese). Anyway, you did the damn thing on this!
My go to macaroni recipe now. For years i was doing it my grandmas way. So long and made the kitchen HOT. Thank you for this time saving recipe.
Could you do one with larger servings?
This is going to be made for my Easter dinner.
THANK YOU! I would give you 100 stars if I could….Finally a Mac and cheese recipe that left hardly any left overs!!!! This will be my ‘go to’ from now on. It was a hit with the adults and children! I followed your very clear directions to a T except, I used Heavy whipping cream instead of half and half due too, store was out of half/half and I was running out of time. I was nervous about how it would turn out, but WOW, spot on perfect. Quick to assemble. I can’t thank you enough!! So here’s a virtual ((((hug ))))from me. Have a blessed Easter tomorrow ๐
XOXOXO!!
I made this for Easter. It was a hit and everyone wanted more. I didn’t change anything but I made a mistake but it turned out really good. Because I doubled the recipe I had to buy 2 cans of the cheddar cheese soup. I mistakenly bought 1 can of the soup and 1 can of broccoli cheese soup. I didn’t have time to return to the store so I decided to use the soup. No one knew the difference. It was delicious. I will definitely make it again but use the
cheddar cheese soup. Thanks again for showing me how to make this in the slow cooker.
Thanks so much for trying my recipe Linda!
MS. ROSIE, I ENJOY WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS, VERY HELPFUL. YOUR COOKING IS BEAUTIFUL AND I WILL FOLLOW YOUR BLOGS FOR NOW ON! GREAT JOB. I USE YOUR RECIPES ALL THE TIME.
Thanks so much for the feedback Tammy! I truly appreciate it!
This is my favorite easy Mac & Cheese recipe! I never get boiled pasta right so this takes any guess work out. And- it’s a delicious, creamy recipe! I do have to stir it with my older crockpot so I don’t get a burnt spot. I layer 1/2 the Cheese on top but then stir it in after an hour or so. The pasta cooks perfectly, but don’t cook it more than 3 hours.
I love this Mac and cheese, I make it every year for the holidays! Thank you
Hi, Rosie! Can I double this recipe if I only have a 4 quart crockpot? Thank you for the information!
Hi Stephanie! I don’t think a 4 qt is big enough to double this recipe.
I have been making this recipe for years now. It is always a crowd pleaser! Itโs my go to Thanksgiving and Christmas THANK YOU โค๏ธ
Happy Holidays! XOXO
Still my favorite recipe ๐
Iโve been using your recipe for years! Thank you for making it easy ๐
